A Night With You: Episode 7

Dong Soo and Yoon Bok walk away from the gate, while Dong Soo is still in awe over Yoon Bok’s painting.

“Hyung, once more you see the painting, you can make a hole in it,” Yoon Bok protests.
“Once more, just once more. I don’t think I can see her for a long time.”
“Where do you go?”
“Gyeongju. As beacon guard.”

Yoon Bok is exasperated to hear Dong Soo is sent to far, faraway border from Hanyang. Dong Soo tells him that it’s because he missed a lot of practices.

Flashback

Dong Soo, Yeo Woon and Cho Rip is in practice exam. The three show quite good skills and even defeat other trainee guards. But the commander come and announce the result, they have the lowest score because they missed many practices and must go to beacon post on the border. Dong Soo expresses his disbelief but it still can’t change the decision. He must go to the border.

Yoon Bok pats his back and tells him to do his best. Dong Soo wraps his hand around Yoon Bok’s neck, saying that his best friend sure knows the best. But it makes Yoon Bok uncomfortable and lets go of his hand. Dong Soo is confused by Yoon Bok’s behaviour but he doesn’t ask him. Instead Dong Soo makes a request to Yoon Bok.

“Yoon Bok-ah, while I’m away, do you want to help me? Please draw me Jin Yi’s painting so I won’t feel lonely.”
“Aigoo, is your head only filled with Jin Yi? You have to pay me quite a fortune.”
“How much?”
“Not with money, but with something else.” Yoon Bok is suddenly blushing.

Dong Soo readily agrees with the condition. He feels more at ease now. He thinks tonight he will have sweet dreams, thanks to Jin Yi and Yoon Bok.

While Jin Yi is playing gayageum in the middle of night. She can’t sleep tonight and her best friend in this gisaeng house is gayageum who can always accompany her whenever she feels sad or happy. Tonight she plays sad melodies to her heart content, although she isn’t very sure why she feels sad.

Morning comes and Dong Soo readies himself for long trip today. They can’t bring horses so Dong Soo, Yeo Woon and Cho Rip have to walk from the capital to their destination. It’s very long trip, through the markets, rivers, hills and mountains. When they finally come to the beacon post, Dong Soo is exhausted.

He has to do laundry chores and he grumpily does the job. After the laundry chores, Dong Soo rests and lets his imagination running wild. He imagines Jin Yi dancing in front of him. She’s very beautiful with a paper fan in one hand and her movements set his heart to flutter. He imagines himself to be her only audience and he even wants to dance with her, if only he isn’t bad at dancing.

Then he imagines her flirting with Kim Jung Han and he suddenly feels really jealous. He shakes his head and remins himself that it’s just his imagination. Yeo Woon and Cho Rip who pass by just think Dong Soo as a useless fool and leave him with his daydream.

Meanwhile as per Dong Soo’s request, Yoon Bok goes to gisaeng house to draw the gisaeng. Sometimes he succesfully draws Jin Yi in secret, sometimes not. His lover, Jeong Hyang is suspicious because he likes to hang out at gisaeng house these days. She tells him that she doesn’t like he goes to gisaeng house often because their relationship would be known to others. Yoon Bok smiles, he said it’s for her anyway.

Jin Yi is busy entertaining the guests. She doesn’t have time to think about Dong Soo and tries to not remember him. She doesn’t even think about anything else but her own art. Whoever sees Jin Yi and her art is lucky, because Jin Yi is really picky when it comes to her customer.

While Dong Soo has a hard time at the beacon post. Dong Soo and his friends must wake up at early hours, doing menial jobs, cleaning and cooking while still learning to pass for higher exam. He also receives paintings from Yoon Bok, once a month. The first painting depicts a gisaeng rides horse with the servants.

The second painting depicts a man holding a woman’s hand. Both of them look happy but shy. The man is wearing scholar hat, making Dong Soo furious.

“What is this?!! What did Yoon Bok paint!! Did he make me jealous?”

Dong Soo is angry and rips the painting. Then Dong Soo begs the beacon chief to allow him to leave for few days. The beacon chief allows him, but first Dong Soo must fight off criminal gangs. Dong Soo pouts and wants to say no to the chief. But the chief won’t change his mind. So Dong Soo finally prepares to leave. Yeo Woon asks him if he really has to go. It’s dangerous to fight off the gangs alone.

“Hey, Dong Soo, do you really have to go? What if you can’t defeat them all?” Yeo Woon tells him.
“Well, I have to find way.”
“But it’s really dangerous. Why you have to go?”
“I know. You don’t need to worry, I can handle them.”
“Is it because her? Pull yourself together! Do you really want to go to that extent?”
“I tell you no need to worry! If you never fall in love, don’t say anything about it!!” Dong Soo is upset.

Yeo Woon can’t say anything although he still uneasy. Dong Soo then bids goodbye to the his friends and chief. Yeo Woon tells him to take care.

On the other side, Jin Yi faces new guest as they hold a banquet on the city. Jin Yi has to perform her famous sword dance.

Just few hours after he walks, Dong Soo meets with the gang. They’re 12 people with quick and agile movements. Each of them holds a sword. Dong Soo releases his sword. He reads their movements and reacts quickly. The battle is imbalance and Dong Soo is quickly outnumbered. One of them slashes Dong Soo’s arm and injures his face. He’s cornered and no one helps him!

A Night With You: Episode 6

Jin Yi leaves, upset with both grown-up men who act like kids. She meets her headmistress and the headmistress asks her why her looks is so bad.

“Jin Yi-ah, why do you frown? Smile, or no one will come to you looking like that,” she says Jin Yi.
“Just that 2 morons on my room. I feel really upset with them!”
“Stop it. As if you never see men before. By the way you never looked this way, you wouldn’t even care with men before. Anyway don’t forget your role as gisaeng.”

Jin Yi thinks to herself and it seems true that she wouldn’t even care to stream of men as her guest before. She excuses herself from the headmistress and thinks about it.

Meanwhile two men are still in a brawl, neither wants to retreat. Yoon Bok is caught in the middle, he wants to be mediator but it seems they’re too occupied with themselves.

“Hey, if you want her you should come earlier. I also pay to see her,” Dong Soo says.
“I pay double to see her,” Jung Han replies.
“It’s your fault that she upsets like that.”
“No, it’s your fault, I’m regular customer here. If she doesn’t want to meet me, she’ll be the one who lost.”
“Aish, this man!”
“Hyung, Dong Soo hyung just stop it, okay?” Yoon Bok begs to Dong Soo. “My Lord, please forgive my friend.”
“Nevermind, I’d leave anyway!” Dong Soo says so and leaves.

Jin Yi sees the three of them finally leaves the gisaeng house. She’s relieved, but also feels sad. Is she too harsh to them, she thinks. But they’re too noisy and she really hates noisy man. Come to think about it, she has never think a man as a man, but as customer who she should serve. Her world is only arts, or so she thinks, after Kim Eun Oh, her young lover died. Why does she care about them now? Or even, her fascination for Dong Soo is what interests her more.

“Come to think about it, he isn’t yangban, nor government official, just a palace guard. He won’t benefit me in any way. I didn’t have any connection with him before but I feel close to him. He’s warm, funny and friendly guy. He’s always cheerful. If young master Kim was still alive, he must be around his age. Ah, why did he leave me to faraway place? Didn’t he promise to find happiness together?” she says to herself.

Dong Soo and Yoon Bok comes to a drinking tavern. Yoon Bok refuses to drink but he agrees to pour the drink for Dong Soo. He looks like in a mess. Yoon Bok has never find him like this. Dong Soo blabbers and rattles off all his thoughts and worries.

“Hey, Yoon Bok-ah... Does she even think about me? Why did she decide that? Why? Because.. that minister? Ah yeah that minister... That old bearded man..”
“Hyung, don’t say like that, he’s my minister.”
“Who cares if he’s your minister? This minister or that minister, they only think about themselves. Now what if I can’t meet her again? Will he find me another gisaeng? But no, I don’t want to... I want my Jin Yi.. I want her so badly.”

Yoon Bok feels Dong Soo drinks too much but he can’t fault him. He only looks at him pitifully. Because Dong Soo is too drunk, he falls asleep on the floor. Yoon Bok worries about him but it’s impossible for him to brings him to the palace right now. Finally Yeo Woon comes and sees Dong Soo in a mess. Yoon Bok asks him how does he know Dong Soo here.

Yeo Woon smiles and says, “From experience.”

Yeo Woon gives Dong Soo piggyback and brings him to his horse. Dong Soo is too drunk to understand anything so Yeo Woon just silently rides horse with Dong Soo sleeps on his back.

In the morning Dong Soo still sleeps soundly. Samo throws cold water to his face to wake him up. Dong Soo is startled, he’s confused and finds himself in his room. Samo tells him to wake up and ready for punishment.

“Where was you yesterday? Why did you come on drunken state with Yeo Woon?” Samo asks frighteningly.

Yeo Woon wants to help him but Dong Soo stops him from saying anything.

“I was wrong. Yesterday I was at gisaeng house,” Dong Soo answers.
“Again? There again. You rascal, do you think you can enjoy your life everyday without working? Are you fool? Does love feed you?”
“I was wrong. I apologize.”
“What do you do so wrong? It’s not going out to gisaeng house itself but your attitude that you forget to practice just because you go out and have fun with her. Do you understand?”
“Yeah.”
“Don’t only say that, but change! Your punishment today is to stand with one foot till sunset and reflect to yourself. Don’t even think about escape! If not, I’ll really forbid you from seeing that gisaeng.”

Dong Soo can’t argue with his teacher and just do as he’s told. He is used to this punishment. Yeo Woon pats him on the back and then leaves. Dong Soo doesn’t care about the punishment and just focuses for today. Even though his chance to meet Jin Yi again is slim, he will still try.

Just before sunset Yoon Bok comes to see Dong Soo. He’s curious about the punishment and his condition. He also teases him that he’s so weak in front of woman.

“Hyung, did you remember last night? Augh, such a waste of body but so weak because of love.”
“Eiy, it’s just that you never know about that feeling right? When you can’t meet your woman again, how would you do?”
“Ah, hyung but we’re men have to be strong. Don’t have such weak guts.”
“Everyone who drinks as much as me last night would be drunk and weak too.”
“No, I’m not.”

Yoon Bok continue to teases him, until Dong Soo forgets about his punishment. He really enjoys his friendship with Yoon Bok because he’s such a funny and cutie guy.

At that time, Samo comes and Dong Soo finishes his punishment. Samo tells him that Dong Soo will leave next week to a mountain as part of his task. When he asks for how long, Samo can’t answer because it could be a month, two months, or even a year. Dong Soo sighs that he knows his time for a more difficult task is coming. But before that, he asks Samo’s permission to say goodbye to Jin Yi.

Jin Yi is learning a dance with paper fan. She dances gracefully and happily, seems like she always happy whenever she dances. Her footsteps are light and the music blends to create perfect harmony.

Dong Soo looks from a far before calls Jin Yi’s name. She’s startled and looks at him, but she continues dancing till the music stops. Dong Soo is disappointed because she doesn’t care about him anymore. After that dance, Dong Soo tries to meet Jin Yi, but she puts her poker face.

“Did you even remember what I’m saying? I won’t meet you again,” she says.
“I remember it. I know. But please listen to me once more. I have something to say. If you want to listen, please come at midnight outside the gate,” he tells her.

Then he bids farewell before Jin Yi can ask what is it about. Jin Yi is just confused at his strange behaviour and cryptic words. But she won’t think about it now, because she needs to learn new dance. She can’t lose to another gisaeng from other troupe.

Later at midnight, Dong Soo waits outside the gate. He can feel his own fear and it gives him goosebumps. The winds that night is particularly cooler, Dong Soo folds his arm and afraid he will catch a cold. He’s anxious, afraid that she won’t come and it’s over for them.

Minutes by minutes passing, Dong Soo is increasingly anxious. He’s waiting right at the end of an alley so he can see anyone passing by but no one passes by so far. He closes his eyes and hopes she will come. Suddenly he can hear light footsteps coming to him. It’s a shadow of woman and when she get closer, he smiles at her. Jin Yi finally comes even though she grumpily comments that she has busier life than just listen to young man’s speech. But Dong Soo doesn’t care and holds her hand, thanks her for coming.

He tells her his story that he will leave soon and he doesn’t know when he will come back. He may never come back. Jin Yi’s eyes glisten, she doesn’t know what to say. Dong Soo says sorry and hugs her. She doesn’t refuse the hug and he gives her a kiss. Moonlight beams on them and the moon seems their only witness.

But no, Yoon Bok also sees them and sketch a painting. Dong Soo seems aware of Yoon Bok and looks around. He calls him a pervert and catches him. Jin Yi excuses herself and bids farewell to them.

“Dude, you and your painting obsession on woman. Let me take a look first!” Dong Soo balks at him.
“Hyung, you and her are perfect! Just perfect!!”
“Does Dohwaseo teach you to peek at other people’s business?”
“No. But I love what I paint.”

Dong Soo scoffs at him, but looking at the painting, he thinks he may have to bring Yoon Bok’s painting to his station at the mountain as a reminder to her.

A Night With You: Episode 5

“Yoon Bok-ah!!” His teacher, Danwon Kim Hong Do screams.

Kim Hong Do begs to the officials to cancel the punishment but they don’t want to hear his reason. Jeongjo enters and he looks like still upset because of the painting. He interrogates Yoon Bok himself. Kim Hong Do looks distraught.

“Painter Shin Yoon Bok, are you still using your brain to paint? That painting... Why do you paint women bathing on Dano Day?” Jeongjo looks at him angrily.
“That is... That is actually gisaengs from Songdo Gibang. Shouldn’t we, painters, be your eyes to see lives outside the palace?”
“Gisaeng from Songdo? Do you mean Hwang Jin Yi?”
“Yes, yes Jeonha. I only want to draw them, including Hwang Jin Yi. If it’s my fault, I will take the punishment,” Yoon Bok wails.

Jeongjo is a bit calmer when he hears Yoon Bok reasoning and he no longer upset. He then proceed to cancel the punishment. The officials and ministers protest right away, but Jeongjo waves his hand and tells them to shut up. He also orders Yoon Bok to meet him later. Yoon Bok bows and thanks Jeongjo many times for his grace.

Meanwhile Dong Soo just hears that Yoon Bok escapes heavy punishment because Jeongjo. He goes straight to Yoon Bok to asks him his feelings. Yoon Bok is actually a bit confused because the king suddenly became calmer the moment he said about the gisaengs from Songdo Gibang. Dong Soo asks him why, but Yoon Bok is also not sure. He promises to look for the reason when he meets Jeongjo later. Dong Soo can’t believe Yoon Bok will meets the king tonight. He wishes him good luck and excuses himself.

“Okay then. Good luck! I’ll leave first!” Dong Soo waves his hand to Yoon Bok.
“Hey, where are you going?” Yoon Bok asks.
“Where else but to my training! I just check if you’re okay today,” Dong Soo cheekily smiles.

Dong Soo trains hard with his fellow friends. He’s determined to be the best swordsman in Joseon. Lastly, he has to face off Yeo Woon. He tells him to just attack him, but because Yeo Woon knows him best, he relents and lets Dong Soo beats him. Dong Soo smiles at his friend while showing good sword skills. Both of them seems enjoying the training.

Meanwhile Jin Yi is in Gibang and she has to greet government officials at a banquet. One of them is Minister of Arts, Kim Jung Han. Jin Yi gives her best to dance beautifully, making the audiences in awe with her. All eyes are on her and she makes no mistake in dancing. She shows great movement, making people fall in love with her. Jung Han only sits in silence, his heart is still breaking every time he sees her.

Jung Han smiles at Jin Yi and approaches her after the performance. He wants to take a walk with her. Jin Yi is uneasy to reject him, so she agrees eventually. They go to forest nearby and chit chat. Jung Han talks to her very carefully, tries not to remember the past. However Jin Yi knows well that Jung Han still likes her. They go to riverside and rest for a while.

“Jin Yi-ah, are you happy now that you’re known as famous courtesan?”
“My Lord, it’s always my dream to serve people with arts. An artist’s goal is not to gain popularity. It is to convey feelings,” she explains.
“You seem to know arts than myself,” he praised her.

She blushes a little but then excuses herself. She thinks it won’t be good to stay with him longer. He sees her back from afer, clearly affected by her.

Just then, at the palace Yoon Bok meets Jeongjo. He brings along his teacher, Kim Hong Do just in case he can’t defend himself against the king. Jeongjo smiles and praises them as the best artists in Joseon.

“Jeonha, why do you summon me here?” Yoon Bok asks.
“It’s nothing important, but as you said yourself I want you to be my eyes outside the palace since I can’t go outside easily,” Jeongjo says.
“What I have to do?”
“I’m really curious with Hwang Jin Yi, the famous gisaeng. Can you at least report to me how she is? This is my order.”

Yoon Bok raises eyebrows at the strange request. He doesn’t reply soon and looks at Hong Do to look for an agreement. Hong Do slightly nods.

“What is the reward, Jeonha?” Hong Do asks
“3000 nyang for you!”

Hong Do and Yoon Bok gape at the large reward. It’s really big sum of money so they can’t easily reject it. They both agreee to conduct the request and excuse themselves from Jeongjo. When they leave, Jeongjo wonders to himself if he really do what’s the best interest for him or his curiousity takes over.

Dong Soo takes his horse and goes to Songdo with light heart. He’s happy that his training goes well and now he wants to meet his sweetheart. He gallops the horse and even imagines Jin Yi races beside him. He’s only sad that it’s only his imagination.

Dong Soo comes to Songdo Gibang and makes request to stay with Jin Yi that night. Jin Yi looks at him and can’t help but smile. He also looks at her and he lights up upon seeing her. He goes to her room and notices something different than before. He pouts that it seems many men have come by to the room.

“What do you expect from lowly gisaeng? Do you want me to lose the customers?” Jin Yi asks him.
“Well, just that that I don’t like it. As a man, if I see you with another man should I be happy? Of course not.” Dong Soo says honestly.
“I’m sure it’s just your jealousy.”

They pass the night by gayageum music and Dong Soo seems to enjoy it a lot. He closes his eyes as the music sounds poke his ears. He really doesn’t want to leave the room and want to stay with her forever. A while later, Jin Yi asks him if he’s sleeping, she pokes him but he doesn’t respond. Jin Yi smiles at him and notes that he’s cute.

She puts a blanket to cover him, but as the blanket touches him he slowly wakes up and looks at her innocently. She looks away because she’s shy but Dong Soo grabs her hand and tells her to sleep beside him. She refuses him but his force is stronger and he pulls her to his side. She falls on his side and their eyes meet each other. A strong tension felt between them. She can hear his breath and her own heart also beating so fast. He leans on her, she’s embarrased and closes her eyes. His lips touches hers and she can feel the stings, the sensation. They kiss each other passionately and Dong Soo continues to kiss at her cheek and her ears. Dong Soo removes her top slowly...

Meanwhile outside there’s Kim Jung Han and he demands to meet Jin Yi. But the Head Mistress says he can’t because she has another guest that night. Jung Han says he will pay double to see her. The Head Mistress asks the money up front and Jung Han gives her. She then goes to Jin Yi’s room and knocks it. She peeps on the room and tells Jung Han what happens.

But Jung Han doesn’t like it, he barges the room suddenly. Dong Soo and Jin Yi are startled and Jin Yi wears her clothes as quickly as possible. While Dong Soo is only on his undergarments.

“Hey, what are you doing here, Mister? Why do you disturb me? Do you wanna die?” Dong Soo balks at Jung Han.
“Sorry, I already pay her for tonight. So you move out! How dare you to touch Hwang Jin Yi!!”

Yoon Bok also comes to the scene but they’re already in argument. He calms down Dong Soo because Jung Han is high-ranking official.

“Dong Soo hyung, stop it! He’s Minister of Arts, Kim Jung Han!” Yoon Bok tells him.
“So what? Why is it matter even if he’s the minister? I come here first!” Dong Soo says.
“Just stop it, he’s close to the king. What are you doing here, anyway?”

They’re still in heated argument until Jin Yi feels enough is enough.

“Just stop it all! I won’t serve any of you anymore!!” she leaves her room.

Dong Soo and Jung Han follows her to persuade her to change her mind. But Jin Yi won’t listen to them. While Yoon Bok secretly draws the fight scene and gives it title “Who Will be The Hero at The Brothel?”
