That time the military, arts, and education is flourished.
The amount of scholars, artists and warriors have increased by many. Two of
them are close friends, Dong Soo and Yoon Bok. Dong Soo is a warrior-turns-king
bodyguard while Yoon Bok is a royal painter at Dohwaseo (Royal Painting
Academy). They both get close because Jeongjo likes them as his loyal men.
Yoon Bok asks Dong
Soo to take him to the market. Dong Soo refuses it because he has more
important thing to do.
“Why me? Why are you not asking Kim Hong Do sonsaengnim (teacher). I’m
busy this afternoon,” Dong Soo says.
“Ah, come on hyung! Sonsaengnim is busy for exam tomorrow, I
have to draw for tomorrow... You know I can’t ride horse. You should take me to
the market.”
Then Yoon Bok promises to show him to Hwang Jin Yi, the best
gisaeng in Joseon. Dong Soo agrees eventually. He’s really curious about Hwang
Jin Yi that becomes the talk of the capital.
The market is very crowded. At the market, there’s sword
dance performance by Songdo troupe. They goes from market to market to perform
dance. Hwang Jin Yi is dancing with sword beautifully. She has no fear and her
eyes show charm and charisma.
Yoon Bok is busy drawing the gisaengs doing sword dance. While
Dong Soo is captivated by her beauty.
Baek Dong Soo waves his hand to
her, but she ignores him. He has never seen a woman as beutiful as her. He
murmurs, “No wonder everyone said she’s the best gisaeng.” He takes a look on
Yoon Bok’s painting and interested on it. The painting itself shows the
gisaengs doing sword dance. The colors are so beautiful and vivid. It’s a
painting that no one can forget. “You paint so well, Yoon Bok-ah,” he praises
him. Yoon Bok seems shy hearing the compliment.
The performance is finished and the gisaengs are prepared to
leave. Dong Soo asks Yoon Bok if they can spend the night at gibang (gisaeng’s
house). Yoon Bok lights up, he also wants to spend the night with his favorite
gisaeng, Jeong Hyang. He misses her gayageum’s voice.
That night Yoon Bok is with Jeong Hyang while Dong Soo with
Hwang Jin Yi. But Jin Yi is a tough woman. She only wants to play gayageum and
drink, not sleeping together. But Dong Soo brags that she’ll soon fall for his
charm. She only plays gayageum then stops. She has no interest on him. It hurts
his pride. He asks how much he must pay to sleep with her.
“Young Master, I’m not sure you can pay me as you’re not
nobleman. You should pay me 50 nyang (coins),” Jin Yi said.
“50? 50 coins? But I only have 20 coins.”
“Then forget about it and sleep outside! But before that pay
me 20 nyang first for this gayageum playing and drinks”
Dong Soo goes outside, broke and brokenhearted. That night
Dong Soo unable to unlock Jin Yi’s heart, like many men before him. Many people
admire her and even propose her marriage but she always reject them. He sleeps
under the star that night, remember Yeo Woon, his best friend. He should just
go with Yeo Woon rather than stuck at this gibang and can’t even touch Hwang
Jin Yi.
In the morning Dong Soo and Yoon Bok prepare to leave from
gibang. Dong Soo asks how much he pays for Jeong Hyang because Jin Yi asks him
50 nyang.
“50 nyang?! Jeong Hyang even accepts me with only 5 nyang!”
Yoon Bok laughs.
Dong Soo feels upset, he wonders why Jin Yi asks so much. “Is
it because she’s famous?” he thinks. They then arrived at the palace. Yoon Bok
hurriedly goes to Royal Paintig Academy. The exam will start soon.
On the gisaeng house, Hwang Jin Yi prepares to entertain old
nobleman from the capital. She seems not too happy about it. The ladies greet
him but Jin Yi only looks down, doesn’t want to see him. The head mistress
tells her to behave in front of him. She only greets him slightly.
While in the palace, Dong Soo meets with Yeo Woon, he wants
to ask his help. Dong Soo says he thinks he likes Jin Yi so Yeo Woon should
help him to meet her secretly at night. But the problem is she doesn’t want to
meet him and asks really expensive price to offer her service. Yeo Woon smiles,
his friend is really cute when he’s helpless. He says sure he will help him.
Let’s plan the meeting!
